How to Talk to Your Coach So Things Actually Change

The coach is an action engine, not a chat partner.

Most messages you send produce a real change to your account: a swapped exercise, a logged meal, an updated calorie target, a rescheduled day. Knowing how to phrase a request is the difference between "the coach gave me advice" and "the coach fixed the thing."

This article is the phrasebook.

Coach Chat requires Standard or Concierge tier.

How a single message becomes multiple actions

Every message you send moves through a four-step pipeline:

  1. Input guard. Your message gets sanitized and confirmed as in-scope (fitness, nutrition, recovery).
  2. Context load. The coach pulls your profile, program, nutrition targets, injury history, recent workouts, and conversation history.
  3. Agent loop. An autonomous reasoning loop chains up to 15 tool calls per turn against a library of specialized actions. It picks the right tools for your request and runs them in order.
  4. Structured response. You get a single cohesive response with workout cards, nutrition summaries, or confirmation prompts (not five separate messages).

"Swap my lunch to something higher in protein and move leg day to Friday" runs both changes inside one message. You get one reply with both confirmations.

The coach also remembers across sessions. If you mentioned a knee issue three weeks ago, you don't need to repeat it.

Training requests that work

Injury-aware swap: "My knee is acting up. Swap any exercises that stress it." The coach identifies knee-loading movements (squats, lunges, leg extensions) and substitutes safer variations.

Drop a day: "I can only train 3 days this week instead of 4." The coach removes the least critical session or distributes its volume across the remaining days.

Force a deload: "Make this a deload week. I'm exhausted." The coach inserts a deload via the mesocycle tool. Volume drops, intensity softens, exercises stay.

Shift volume emphasis: "I want more back work this week." The coach adds back sets and pulls volume from a muscle group ahead of schedule.

Reschedule: "Move leg day to Friday." The coach swaps Friday with the day leg day was on. Nothing is lost.

Structural change: "Switch me to upper-lower" or "Add a fifth training day." The coach runs a full weekly adjustment that respects your equipment, injuries, and experience.

Nutrition requests that work

Rebalance around real life: "I'm going out to dinner tonight. Adjust my other meals so I'm still on target." The coach recalculates the rest of the day to keep your daily macros honest.

Constrained swap: "Swap my lunch. I want something with more protein." The coach generates options filtered by protein density. You pick. The swap applies in real time.

Update macros: "Bump my calories up by 200." The coach updates your nutrition targets. The change propagates to future meal plans.

Log by description: "Log a protein shake for me. 30 grams protein, 150 calories." The coach logs it directly to your food diary. No scanning, no searching.

Regenerate the plan: "Regenerate my meal plan. I'm tired of these meals." The coach triggers a full regeneration using your current targets and preferences.

Get groceries: "What do I need to buy for this week's meals?" The coach aggregates ingredients across your plan into a consolidated list.

Resize meals: "Make my breakfast bigger and lunch smaller." The coach redistributes daily calories across meals proportionally.

Progress questions the coach can answer with real data

Weekly summary: "How did I do this week?" Returns workout completion rate, total volume, average RPE, macro adherence, bodyweight trend.

Exercise history: "What's my bench press history?" Pulls your logged sets across recent sessions with weight, reps, and estimated 1RM over time.

Volume sanity check: "Am I overtraining my chest?" Runs your weekly chest volume against MEV, MAV, MRV landmarks and tells you whether you're in the productive range or approaching the ceiling.

Personal records: "What are my current PRs?" Retrieves your top performances across exercises with estimated 1RM.

Streaks: "How long is my current streak?" Returns workout streak, check-in consistency, and earned achievement badges.

Phrasing tips that get faster results

Name the exercise. "Swap overhead press for something shoulder-friendly" resolves faster than "swap one of my exercises."

Give context. "My shoulder hurts when I go overhead" tells the coach which movement patterns to avoid.

Ask for reasoning. "Why did you choose that exercise?" gets you the criteria the coach used: muscle activation, injury avoidance, equipment match.

Combine requests. "Move leg day to Thursday and add an extra back exercise on Monday" runs in a single turn.

Trust the memory. You don't need to repeat your injury history or preferences every time. The coach already has them.

Voice in, voice out

You don't have to type. Two ways to use voice.

Voice notes. Hold the mic button and speak. Recordings up to about 60 seconds get transcribed via Whisper and sent to the coach as text. Useful between sets when typing is annoying. Capped at 30 per hour and 150 per day.

Voice replies. Tap the speaker icon on any coach message and the text generates audio in your coach's voice. Capped at 60 plays per hour.

The caps are generous for normal use and exist to keep costs from running away.

What the coach won't do

A few hard refusals:

No banned substances. Steroids, SARMs, prohormones, DNP, ephedra. Not on the table.

No medical advice. Persistent pain or illness gets a referral to your doctor.

No bypassing safety protocols. Injury contraindications, RPE caps, fatigue guardrails are non-negotiable.

No abandoning the methodology. The coach won't program past your MRV or skip a deload trigger no matter how confident you sound.

If a request is declined, the coach explains why and offers a safe alternative.

What to do next

Open Coach Chat. Pick one specific change you want today (an exercise, a meal, a target, a schedule shift). Type it as a single clear sentence. Send.

The coach will either confirm the change or tell you what's blocking it. Either way you'll know in 5 seconds, not 5 days.
