MEV, MAV, MRV: The Three Numbers That Decide How Much You Train
More sets is not always better. Less is not either.
Most lifters either under-stimulate their muscles by training too little, or out-grind their recovery by training too much. The first group wonders why their program "doesn't work." The second group wonders why they keep getting hurt.
The actual answer is three numbers per muscle group. The amount you need to grow. The amount where growth-per-effort peaks. The amount your body cannot recover from.
Below MEV: wasted gym time. Between MEV and MAV: progress. Between MAV and MRV: progress with rising fatigue cost. Above MRV: injury.
Here are your numbers.
The three landmarks in plain English
MEV (Minimum Effective Volume). The floor. Fewest weekly working sets a muscle needs to maintain size or grow. Training below MEV is a waste of effort. Below MEV gets flagged immediately.
MAV (Maximum Adaptive Volume). The sweet spot. Maximum growth per unit of effort. Most of your training should live at or near MAV. Above MAV, gains-per-set declines.
MRV (Maximum Recoverable Volume). The ceiling. Most volume your body can handle while still recovering between sessions. Exceed MRV consistently and you stop growing, start losing strength, and get hurt. MRV is a warning threshold, not a target.

Your numbers by experience level
The table below shows the exact MEV / MAV / MRV values (weekly working sets) the engine uses.

A few things to notice:
Bigger muscles tolerate more volume. Back can handle 25 sets a week as advanced. Forearms cap out at 12.
Beginners have a narrow range. Less room for error but also less volume needed.
Advanced lifters have a wider range because their stimulus tolerance and recovery capacity are both higher.
"Getting Back" accounts for muscle memory. Returning lifters can handle more than true beginners but need a ramp-up.
Age adjustments
Recovery capacity declines with age even when training experience does not. The engine adjusts for it.
- Age 50 to 64: MRV reduced by 15%. An intermediate lifter's chest MRV drops from 18 to 15 sets per week.
- Age 65+: MRV reduced by 30%. That same chest MRV becomes 12.
MEV and MAV don't change with age. The stimulus needed for growth is roughly the same. What changes is what you can recover from. If the adjusted MRV drops below the original MAV, the engine clamps MAV downward so the sweet spot always sits below the recovery ceiling.
How sets get counted
Not every exercise hits every muscle equally. Bench press hammers your chest. It assists your triceps. The engine credits both differently.
- Primary muscle group: 1.0 set credit per working set.
- Secondary muscle groups: 0.5 set credit per working set.
- Warm-up sets count for nothing.
A bench press set is 1.0 chest, 0.5 triceps, 0.5 shoulders. Six sets of bench is 6 chest, 3 triceps, 3 shoulders.
This prevents the common error of thinking your biceps are getting 12 sets a week when half are rows where biceps are secondary. Every exercise in the library is mapped to its primary and secondary muscle groups. The math runs automatically.
What happens when you drift out of the sweet spot
The engine monitors your weekly volume per muscle group continuously and sorts each into a zone.
Below MEV. Not enough stimulus to grow. The engine recommends adding 1 to 2 sets per week and increases volume on the next adjustment.
MEV to MAV. The productive range. Room to progress. Volume nudges up over the cycle.
MAV to MRV. Still growing. Fatigue accumulating faster. Volume won't increase further unless recovery signals are excellent.
Above MRV. Overtraining risk. The engine recommends pulling 2 to 4 sets per week immediately.

Where landmarks show up in your training
Volume landmarks are woven into four core systems.
Program generation. Your initial program is built so every muscle group's weekly volume falls between MEV and MAV for your experience level. No muscle starts under-stimulated or in an unsustainable range.
Weekly adjustments. Each week, the engine reviews actual volume against landmarks. Recovering well? Volume nudges up. Fatigue elevated? Volume pulls back, but never below MEV.

Deload decisions. When multiple muscle groups approach MRV simultaneously and fatigue signals are elevated, the engine considers triggering a deload.
As your training age increases, your landmarks shift upward and the engine scales with you.
